I chose to leave the battle-scars on the shaft and socket; they're part of what it is. But I don't want it getting soaked and rotting, so I've varnished the wood and rubbed the metal parts well with WD-40.

Makes it look 10 years younger. Maybe I could get a coat of the stuff?
