NOTES The HOSDOC is designed to form the central co-ordination centre for the COAFC System Defence of a well-to-do world, usually of a High Stellar tech level. It rides a high geostationary orbit above the system's main world, and provides a docking port and resupply base for an entire squadron of standard SDBs. HOSDOC is equipped with the very latest sensors and electronics available at TL 14, allowing the detection of intruders at quite long ranges and giving sufficient warning to allow timely interceptor launch. The fighters and SDB are attached to the outside of HOSDOC, allowing them all to be launched simultaneously; a good HOSDOC crew can clear all craft in under half an hour. Once the craft have been launched, HOSDOC's massive array of communication equipment allows it to remain in touch with and co-ordinate all its' brood at interplanetary distances. A large number of the 113 command crew are naval tacticians, and these specialists are positioned in the large holo-tank buried deep in the heart of HOSDOC. Here, they can co-ordinate the defence of the entire system. In the unfortunate eventuality of the SDB screen being dispersed and the main world being attacked, HOSDOC is not without its own defences. Armour as good as a cruiser's, reasonable nuclear dampers and a good sand screen can fend off all but capital ship attacks, while the 100 missile bays and the laser turrets give it a pretty reasonable attack capability - for a carrier. If, however, HOSDOC is overwhelmed and the crew have to escape, all the external docking jetties can be jettisoned (taking ten minutes) and the whole craft becomes Configuration 5 (Sphere) and may perform emergency re- entry as a lifeboat.
