NOTES Also known in naval circles as the Mothership, the fleet carrier is a transport and launch facility for heavy fighters. Its main purpose is the transport of FHs across interstellar distances to the site of battle. In peace, the FC is a mobile port and repair facility for its brood; in war it is a formidable fleet element to be respected. Defences: The FC depends on its phalanx of fighters for the majority of its protection. Typically, 1/3 of the fighters is in flight at any one time. In addition, however, the ship can defend itself with its extensive armament - especially its missiles. In practice, the FC's low armour rating and drive power make it vulnerable and clumsy in battle, and it will join combat only to ensure recovery of its brood. The ship's bay weapons can be used against ground targets. Generally this kind of ground support occurs only in the final stages of a battle when things are being mopped up. Doctrine would preclude risking the ship early in a battle when there is the potential danger of surface-based return fire. The FC is an example of the continuing evolution of starship functions. In this case it represents a splitting off of the fighter carrier functions of older battleships, placing the responsibility in a single ship designed for the purpose. Where once a large dreadnought would carry regiments of troops, phalanxes of fighters and myriad weapons mounts, current practice is to split these various tasks into individual ships. Naval doctrine is to carry troops on troop transports, fighters on fleet carriers and major weapons on battleships. The Antiama class of FCs are named for empresses and consorts from Inperial history.
