I save the offcuts for repair by Dave "Young Frankenstein" Shackleton if any shear in later life - he has one of those clever gadgets that cuts a cone and funnel to splice the bits together. I'd never do that anywhere near the hand, but arrows for me tend to break across the neck of the taper, and I'm comfortable enough with that. Also good for stain colour and taper testing.
